Protected by the Elf Prince is the fifth book in L. Rose's Protected By series. After meeting Dashiel and Landon in Protected by the Vampire, I was curious to see how their relationship would develop. I didn't expect their story to have quite so much emotional depth in such a short novella.
The book begins by revisiting the moment Dashiel discovers Landon is his fated mate, which works well for readers returning to the series after a break. It also immediately establishes the foundation of their readership before shifting into Landon's perspective.
Landon's reaction to discovering his fated mate is a man felt believable. He's in his fifties, has only ever been with women, and has spent his life believing the supernatural doesn't exist. Now he has to accept any elves, vampires, and shifters are real—and that fate has chosen a male elf prince as his mate.
I appreciated that his uncertainty wasn't resolved instantly. Landon questions his changing feelings and gradually considers possibilities he never would have imagined before meeting Dashiel.
Dashiel is powerful, possessive, and almost incapable of staying away from Landon, but he still tries to give him space. He remains nearby to protect him without constantly forcing his presence on him. That restraint says a lot about his character, especially as his protective instincts become increasingly difficult to control.
The external conflict comes through Landon's job, where he discovers suspicious discrepancies. I guessed fairly quickly that something was wrong, but the resulting tension worked well. Landon is unknowingly getting involved in something dangerous while Dashiel is already struggling not to protect him from everything.
Once the danger escalates, the story becomes much more intense. Dashiel's reaction to Landon being threatened genuinely game through on the page, and the suspense even managed to get my heart racing.
I also enjoyed how naturally characters from the previous books were included. They aren't just cameos; their relationships and abilities matter to the story and make the series feel increasingly interconnected. We also learn more about Dashiel's family and his position as a prince, without the book relying on predictable manufactured drama.
What worked best for me was that Landon's decision about Dashiel remained his own. Fate brings them together, but it doesn't erase Landon's uncertainty or remove his agency. He's still allowed to question what he wants and decide what the bond means to him, which made the romance feel much more satisfying.
I did have one minor issue with the timeline toward the end. The book references several weeks passing, but there is also a one-month deadline established earlier, and I couldn't quite make the timing add up. It briefly pulled me out of the story, though it wasn't enough to damage my overall enjoyment.
Otherwise, the pacing was excellent. The romance has room to develop, the intimate moments feel meaningful, and the external conflict arrives at the right point. I also finished the book wanting stories for Monkey and Coms, whose reactions to the supernatural world have been entertaining throughout the series.
Overall, I'd give Protected by the Elf Prince 5 our of 5 stars. Despite the minor timeline issue, Landon and Dashiel kept me invested, the suspense was effective, and the story had more emotional depth than I expected from such a quick read.
More importantly, this isn't simply a book I'm happy to own physically.
It's one I'd happily reread again and again.
